Taiwan Winds Soar in St. Louis

The Saint Louis Science Center and the Greater St. Louis Chapter of the Taiwanese Association of America present Taiwan Winds Soar in St. Louis, an outdoor, heritage festival on Saturday, May 3.

The highlight of the day, which celebrates Taiwanese American Heritage Week, comes when internationally recognized kite-maker Buteo Huang flies, for the first time, his new masterpiece, a prehistoric pterosaur kite with a wingspan of more than 20 feet.

In addition to the pterosaur kite’s inaugural flight, Taiwan Winds offers visitors the opportunity to:

-Make and fly a kite of their own
-Sample cuisine from local Taiwanese restaurants
-Experience Taiwanese cultural performances
-Learn about feats of Taiwanese engineering and architecture
-Participate in a kite design workshop on Sunday, May 4, hosted by Huang

An exhibition of more than 30 other kites designed by Huang will be on display inside the Science Center through mid-June.

Be an extra for the upcoming film "Formosa Betrayed"!

From: Formosa Betrayed Production
When: Wednesday, April 23rd Filming
Where: Northwestern University, Evanston campus
Call time: 6:30am
Wrap time: 1:00pm at the latest. Most likely, you would be done by noon, and then we would serve lunch.

On Wednesday, April 23rd we will be filming a critical, emotional scene in our movie: the Funeral Procession in honor of the slain Professor Wen. Turnout from the Taiwanese-American community and it’s supporters in Chicago will greatly add to the power of this moment. We look forward to your participation.

Some specifics:
  • All Background must come dressed to fit the period: early 1980’s Chicago winter. We will provide a web-site address of clothing reference images. We hope to hear from our most under-represented age range: 30-40 year olds, but all adults are welcome.
  • The filming commitment will be from 630am to 1pm. We’ll ensure a comfortable work environment and will require your attendance for the entirety of the scene. Being unavailable at any point in the shooting of the scene compromises the production. (Think “disappearing actor.”)
  • Participation in the emotion of the scene will involve some direction. Given the nature of the moment, a symbolic Funeral Procession, Background actors will show and act according to the gravity of the moment. The director and producers will call on you to make the scene real in subtle, genuine ways.

So if you ARE interested, reply ASAP!:

Step 1) send an email to formosa@atmospherecastingchicago.com
Step 2) CC jon@formosathemoviecom and Jon Lee will help everything get processed.
Step 3) Provide this information in the email:

- Name
- Phone #
- Email address
- Age
- Gender

Click here for MORE detailed information about what to wear

We look forward to creating, together, a great moment in Formosa Betrayed!

Newly formed TAPS Chicago

Various people have asked whether there was a social Taiwanese group for the Midwest ever since this site got started. Unfortunately, the answer had always been, "none that I know of", at least until now.

There is a new group, called CTAP (Chicago Taiwanese American Professions) that has sprung up on Facebook with Howard Lien leading the charge. They currently don't have a web site, but they use facebook groups to coordinate their events. As far as I can tell, they're fairly active.

So if you're interested in other Taiwanese in the Chicago area, and meet up with them! Or if you're shy, drop Howard Lien a line.
